In some ways it is not necessarily maladaptive for a cat to be afraid of unfamiliar things. If a cat does not have experience with many new people, they often will hide when someone comes over until they are certain that coming out is safe. In other situations they just find things that move in an unpredictable manner or make strange noises very scary and seem never to get used to them. If this is affecting the quality of the cats life so that they hide all the time, professional help with a veterinary behaviorist should be sought.
