When you open the door to their scratching behavior, that behavior is rewarded and therefore will continue. If you never opened the door when they scratched they probably would stop doing so. Since this has been going on for so long, it would take quite some time of ignoring the cats for them to understand that you are not going to open the door when they scratch. Giving them an interesting place to spend their time such as a window perch or a tall climbing tower might help.
