Scratching furniture is a marking function-the cat is trying to delineate their territory. The need to mark may increase during times of change or stress for the cat. This could be anything from not feeling well, to outside noises or other animals, to a change in the family routine. Examining all of these things might help identify what might be upsetting the cat. In addition, covering the furniture and moving the scratching post nearby might help redirect her to a more appropriate scratching venue.
